Country Home Boundary Upgrade in Staffordshire : Post and Rail and Hedge Planting

Restoring a Tired Boundary with a More Traditional Finish

This project involved upgrading the frontage of a country home in Staffordshire where the existing boundary and fence panels no longer suited the setting.

Over time, the original panels had begun to rot and look tired and the hedge had lost its density, leaving the boundary feeling sparse and out of keeping with the surrounding countryside.

The brief was simple: create a boundary that felt more traditional and better suited to the property long term.

Stripping Back and Starting Again

We removed the old fence panels and cleared back the existing hedge line to give us a clean starting point.

In their place, we installed creosote post and rail fencing, sheep netting to keep the dogs in and electric cable ready for electric gates to be installed. This style immediately suited the rural setting far better, creating a more open and traditional frontage while still clearly defining the boundary.

To soften the fence line and provide privacy, we planted a mixed hedge alongside it. Laurels were chosen for their large leaves and year-round coverage, blended with a thornier hedge variety to add natural security.

Planting for the Future

This wasn’t just about replacing what was there. It was about improving it.

The new hedge will thicken and mature over time, creating a fuller boundary that enhances both privacy and appearance. As it establishes, it will only add to the overall character of the property.

It’s the kind of job we enjoy most, creating something that looks right now but will look even better in a few years’ time.

The Result

The transformation is clear. A frontage that now feels in keeping with the countryside, practical for everyday use and built with longevity in mind.

The feedback from the local village has been lovely, which is always a good sign that a change feels right in its setting.
